The Celebrity Cricket Sixes will celebrate National Braai Day slightly early with a sporting heroes charity dinner at Kemsley Park in Port Elizabeth tonight.

Guests at the dinner can expect to hear Dave Callaghan, Okkert Brits and Philip Spies sharing some of their funniest stories under the theme of “What happens on tour stays on tour, or does it?”.

The entertainment starts at 7pm with a set by comedian Craig Mischief, followed by dinner and the guest speakers. Tickets are available at R250 per person.

Proceeds are in aid of the tournament’s beneficiaries, the Cancer Association of South Africa and JAG Foundation.

The celebrity dinner serves as an appetiser for the nationwide six-a-side challenge, which launches in PE tomorrow.

Starting at 9am, six star-studded teams will take to the field in a fast-paced format inspired by the Hong Kong Sixes.

Organiser Laurence Finn said each side would be captained by a national cricket legend and spectators could expect to see the likes of Callaghan, Kenny McEwan, Pieter Strydom and Eldine Baptiste in action.

“We’ve introduced a unique handicap system, with a celebrity twist, to keep things competitive.”

Finn said the rest of the team would be made up of a provincial cricketer, a rugby legend, two other non-cricketers and a leading business figure.

Among the assorted sporting achievers putting their cricketing skills to the test will be Olympic pole-vaulter Brits, javelin thrower Spies, former national superbike champion Arushen Moodley and wrestler Mark Beale.

According to Finn, the tournament promised a full day of family entertainment, which includes a beer garden, food and retail stalls and a children’s play area.

“We’ll be stopping play for a live screening of the Rugby World Cup game between New Zealand and France. Who wouldn’t want to watch the match alongside their favourite celebrities?”

Gates open at 8am and tickets cost R20 for adults and R10 for children.

To book, call Laurence on 084 507 3175. For the latest news, visit www.celebrity6s.com, join the Facebook group or follow cricket6s on Twitter.
