Buffalo City families have just a few days left to enter the inaugural SPAR Family Challenge, which takes place along the East London beachfront on Saturday afternoon.

Runners and walkers of all ages and fitness levels are gearing up for the 5km fun run and 10km road race, which follow a scenic route from the Beaconhurst School fields onto the streets of Beacon Bay.

The longer event also includes a 2km beach section.

According to SPAR Eastern Cape marketing manager Abri Swart, organisers were expecting up to three thousand participants to join them on race day.

“We’re working hard to prepare for the last-minute rush of entries.”

Although online entries had closed, Swart said would-be participants could still enter at the registration venue at the school.

“Registration will be open from Wednesday to Friday, between 10am and 4pm daily.”

Alternatively, he said, residents would have one last chance to enter between 8am and 10am on the morning of the race.

“Running clubs and schools are also welcome to do bulk entries during this time.”

Swart said clear skies and mild temperatures were predicted for the day, which would present ideal running and walking conditions.

“So bring your friends and family and enjoy a great afternoon of fresh air, exercise and quality time together.”

He said there would be cash prizes up for grabs for all category winners, with numerous lucky draws for the rest of the field.

All finishers will receive medals, with special race T-shirts and goodie bags available to the first 2 500 entrants.

Swart said the Loaves and Fishes Network, a local charity organisation, would be the official beneficiary of the event.

“By taking part and helping others, participants will feel good inside and out.”

Entry forms are still available from all SPAR stores. The forms must be handed in at registration, where participants can also pay (cash only).

The event kicks off with the 10km race at 1pm, with the 5km event starting 15 minutes later.

Finishers will be able to view their results and print race certificates as well as video footage via www.finishtime.co.za.
