A local telecommunications service provider has thrown its weight behind a light-hearted event with a serious purpose – the Largest Ever Bikini Photo Shoot to raise funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).
Nashua Mobile is supporting what organisers hope will be the world’s largest gathering of bikini-clad women at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on October 23.
“Cancer touches everybody in South Africa at some point in their lives,” said Nashua Mobile’s general manager Edwin Fichardt. “But we also like the fact that the photo shoot is raising awareness of the issue in such a novel and fun way.”
Nashua Mobile first became aware of the Guinness World Record attempt through the involvement of its parent company, which is the title sponsor.
The telecommunications service provider has donated smartphones to event organisers, Club 100 For Ladies, who have been fielding hundreds of queries.
Now potential participants will not only have their phone calls and e-mails answered more swiftly, but also stand a chance to win some of these mobile communication devices.
“We are currently dealing with many calls and e-mails,” said organiser Laurence Finn. “It’s fantastic that Nashua Mobile recognised the challenges and came on board with a business tool that allows for swifter communications.”
Most of Nashua Mobile’s social responsibility projects focus on education or the environment – this is the first cancer awareness initiative that the company has committed itself to.
“Internally, we support the Cansa Shavathon every year, with many of our staff going bald to raise awareness of cancer,” said Fichardt.
Now, as an official sponsor of the Nashua Largest Ever Bikini Photo Shoot, staff are doing even more for Cansa. “Our entire PE office will be taking part, with all of our ladies donning their bikinis for the big event!”
In order to break the current world record, which was set in Russia two years ago, 2 000 ladies of all shapes and sizes are needed to take part.
Statistics from Cansa suggest that one in four South Africans will be affected by cancer. Fichardt therefore urged individuals and companies to support the cause and participate.
“In South Africa we have many social challenges such as HIV/Aids, poverty, hunger and lack of education – all of which deserve attention and awareness,” conceded Fichardt.
“With all of these important issues to address, it is easy for cancer to slip under the radar. Hence the importance of initiatives such as this.”
