Entertainers in Port Elizabeth and surrounds will be given a chance to audition for slots in this year’s MTN Nelson Mandela Bay Splash Festival programme.

According to David Limbert, coordinator of the series of open auditions that will take place around the metro next week, the aim is to “expose local talent that is of a high enough quality to feature at the annual Splash Festival”.

He says auditions for the Easter festival will be open to all forms of entertainment, including bands, solo artists, variety acts, comedians, children’s entertainers and so on. Limbert stresses the fact that participants need not be professional performers.

“Our primary goal is to provide an opportunity for all new or underexposed acts, whether they are solo artists or part of a group.”

Participants will be judged by a panel of well-respected experts from various entertainment genres at each of the audition venues, says Limbert.

“Acts that meet the required level of quality and entertainment value will be forwarded to the programme committee. They will make the final selection based on their needs.”

Limbert says auditions – which will take place in the afternoons and evenings – are free and a sound system, microphones and general backline equipment will be provided.

“There will not be a scoring system or winners and results will not be made public. Acts will however be given feedback if requested.

“If there is any uncertainty about the auditioning process, interested parties are welcome to phone me.”

He says the entertainment schedule at this year’s MTN Nelson Mandela Bay Splash Festival, which takes place from April 2 to 5, will include: established local performers, new local talent from the auditions, local talent as selected by the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Music Association (Nemmma), and national headline and specialty acts.

According to Limbert, a database of performers that meet the required standard will be made available to event organisers.

Audition slots can be booked by phoning him on 041 393 4800. Participants are not bound by the venue closest to them.

The audition venues are as follows: Allen Ridge Hall, Uitenhage (February 15); NU13 Community Hall, Motherwell (16th); Gelvandale Community Hall (17th); Red Location Museum, New Brighton (19th); and The Boardwalk (20th).
