The University of Johannesburg continued to rule the roost in varsity squash when they won the University Sport South Africa title for the sixth year in a row in Johannesburg last week.
Not only did the team retain their overall title, they also produced the men’s and women’s champions in the individual sections and supplied four players to the Ussa team named at the end of the event.
For good measure, the university’s second team were crowned champions in the B section, which UJ squash manager Reedwaan Asvat said illustrated the depth of the sport at the institution.
“The first team was unbeaten during the week and we had our toughest match in the final against Pretoria University, whom we defeated 19-8,” said Asvat. “The second team had a comfortable 21-7 win over North-West University in their final.”
He added that it was extremely satisfying to continue their success on the squash court.
“The players have worked really hard on and off the court and deserve the success which has come their way.
“In addition, we need to thank coach Mike Bester for all his work in preparing the players.”
After being runner-up last year, Alexa Pienaar won the individual title for the first time, defeating Tuks rival Hannelise Human 3-0 in the final.
In the men’s section, Blessing Muhwati was defeated in the final but crowned Ussa champion because his opponent (Thoboki Mohohlo) is not studying in South Africa and therefore not eligible for the title.
It was also Muhwati’s first title, following in the footsteps of teammate Kyle Maree, who won last year.
UJ’s Pienaar, Maree, Muhwati and Kacey-Leigh Dodd were included in the Ussa team.
The tournament was hosted by UJ at their Auckland Park campus and Asvat paid tribute to a number of staff members who contributed to the smooth running of the week.
“We would like to thank the UJ sport staff, head of sport Nomsa Mahlangu and the student accommodation and residence staff for all their support in making it a success.
“In addition, the support services and security staff played a big role throughout.”
