The City Lodge Hotel Group will mark its fifth year of involvement in The Herald VW Cycle Tour with special accommodation packages for participants travelling to Port Elizabeth at the end of January.

According to Town Lodge general manager Glenn Pappin, the group’s strong presence within walking distance of the start/finish area made it the convenient choice for road cyclists in the weekend festival of cycling.

“We have four hotels on the beachfront, so there’s an accommodation option to suit all tastes and pockets.”

Pappin said the group’s footprint in the city included the one-star Road Lodge, two-star Town Lodge, three-star City Lodge and four-star Courtyard Hotel.

“Although it’s still too early to tell, we’re looking at good occupancies over the weekend of the event.”

He said the group would also sponsor accommodation for race officials and pro teams, as well as “splash and dash” rooms for the 106km Classic winners to freshen up in before the official prize-giving.

Event organiser Linda Harwood added that The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World – official hosts of the event – would round out the accommodation offering with a five-star stay at The Boardwalk Hotel.

“Our cycle tour partners give our participants the full spectrum of choice when it comes to deciding where to stay,” said Harwood.

“All the options are accessible and close to the start, so riders can have a bit more of a lie-in on race day.”

She said the accommodation specials were listed on the race’s website and participants simply had to quote the designated reference code when making their booking to qualify for the discount.

Hobie Beach will be the start/finish venue for the road race component of the tour, while the exhibition level of The Boardwalk Hotel hosts the official race expo and registration on Friday, January 30.

The 30th edition of the event starts with the family-oriented races along the beachfront on Saturday, January 31. These include the Powerade-sponsored 21km Leisure Ride, 10km Sprint, 2km Kiddies’ Ride and 500m Toddlers’ Dash.

For mountain biking enthusiasts, the off-road line-up will run concurrently at Addo just outside PE.

The weekend cycling festival draws to a close on the Sunday with the 55km Pursuit and 106km Classic.
