The Herald VW Cycle Tour will celebrate its 30th anniversary in grand style this year, with a racing prize purse and lucky draws to the value of more than R415 000.
Foremost on the prize list will be the annual vehicle giveaway of a VW Polo 1.4, which has a book value of R155 000, courtesy of the title sponsor.
Event coordinator Linda Harwood said the car always attracted a lot of interest and would be on display at the official race expo and registration at The Boardwalk Hotel and Conference Centre on January 30 and 31.
“The car is the highlight of our lucky draw competition, which means you don’t have to win one of the races to win it!
“Anyone who enters any of our road or mountain bike events will be eligible for the prize – but you must be there to claim it.”
Harwood said the draw would bring the weekend festival of cycling to an exciting conclusion after the 106km Classic on the Sunday.
“The official prize-giving ceremony will take place at our Hobie Beach race village after the road race and there are plenty more reasons to stay and enjoy the vibe.”
She said other incentives included over R50 000 worth of premium household furniture and appliances from long-time supporter Tony’s Furniture, Appliances, Beds & Interior Décor.
“Tony’s has been a loyal partner in our event for the past eight years and in that time we’ve given away everything from flat-screen TVs to beds, coffee makers, chest freezers and washing machines. It really is a case of one PE institution supporting another.”
On the bicycle front, Harwood said Action Cycles had donated a Silverback Sprada 1 full-suspension, 29-inch mountain bike valued at almost R30 000.
In addition, she said technical support partner Cyclo Pro had contributed a Giant Simple Single Cruiser and kid’s bike.
“We’ve also got R20 000 worth of carrier prizes from The Roof Rack Centre to carry your precious bike away.”
For those in need of pampering after a weekend of hard riding, she said Kuzuko Lodge had come to the rescue with a R10 000 luxury weekend retreat.
Harwood said hampers from Powerade and Wayne Pheiffer Cycles and subscriptions to The Herald rounded out the more than R300 000 lucky draw offering.
“This event has grown so much in size and status over the past three decades and our prize offering has increased accordingly.”
With R115 000 for the elite field to compete for, she said South Africa’s top professional teams had already confirmed their participation.
“We look forward to providing lots of excitement and good value for every single rider who takes part.”
