One lucky cyclist who takes up an early bird entry for next year’s The Herald VW Cycle Tour will win a special edition Festina Chronobike Tour de France wristwatch valued at R4 500.
According to organiser Linda Harwood, online entries for the 30th edition of the event opened on October 24 and more than 200 riders had already signed up.
The weekend festival of cycling comprises the mountain biking component at Addo on Saturday, January 31, and the various road races from the Port Elizabeth beachfront on the Saturday and Sunday.
To be eligible for the prize, Harwood said cyclists simply needed to enter online before the end of November.
“All online road and mountain bike entrants across all distances will automatically be entered into the draw but the competition unfortunately isn’t open to manual entries,” said Harwood.
She said the special edition, 2013 model timepiece would be one of four watches sponsored by Festina and Francarlo Jewellers.
“Festina is the official timekeeper of Le Tour, so it’s a really fitting prize for a cycling fan.”
Harwood said the winner would be randomly selected and announced via the website on Monday, December 1.
“The winner will be contacted directly regarding the collection of their prize from Francarlo in Walmer Park.”
Harwood said another Tour de France watch would be awarded to the men’s champion in the Ultimate Quest, which rewards the rider with the best overall time across the 106km Classic road race and 80km Extreme mountain bike challenge.
“The female winner will receive a watch from the Festina Ladies’ Collection.”
She said a fourth watch would be up for grabs in the lucky draw at the official prize-giving ceremony after the 55km and 106km road races.
Racing action starts on the Saturday morning with the Powerade-sponsored family road races – the 21km Leisure Ride, 10km Sprint, 2km Kiddies’ Ride and 500m Toddlers’ Dash.
The mountain bike races – including the 80km Extreme, 60km Adventure, 30km Leisure Challenge, 5km Kiddies’ Challenge and 500m Toddlers Dash – take place on the same day.
