“If you can’t find it at Bruce’s, you won’t find it.” That’s what seasoned Pretoria cyclists say about Bruce Reyneke Cycles in Pretoria.
Bruce, a Springbok on the track and road way back in 1984, is an avid multi-discipline racer these days and has completed more road and mountain bike races than he cares to remember.
Conquering the 2012 Absa Cape Epic, and seven in total, count among his most recent cycling achievements.
Having been a sports fan all his life, he remembers being very active in cycling year-round and this is still true for him to this day.
“In those days track was in summer and road in winter, so I was racing all year long.”
This drive stood him in good stead later on in his life when the lure of cycling became too strong to continue in the field of finance. “I was an auditor and just didn’t enjoy what I did.”
So, in 1988, he opened Bruce Reyneke Cycles and, after moving premises twice, found a permanent home in Lynnwood Road.
The change in location can be attributed to the gradual growth of the store. In fact, a few months ago, he bought out an adjacent shop to expand his.
He says when he started out he wouldn’t have guessed that his business would develop the way that it did.
“Back in those days, people didn’t ride as much for enjoyment. It was mainly road and track racing.
“I opened my shop just as mountain biking was starting out in South Africa.”
A certain incident stands out in his mind, as it turned out to be a very accurate prediction.
“One day a guy came into the shop and said mountain biking was going to take over road cycling. I just laughed at him!”
Today, his shop is considered a one-stop shop for everything cycling-related. Although he specialises in mountain bikes, the full range of road bikes is available, as well as nutritional products, gear, and parts.
In addition to stocking an extensive range of products, he is also the sole South African distributor of Röhloff components and FRM bikes.
He employs six permanent mechanics who offer the full complement of bike services. The shop is also a fully registered bike fitment centre.
Bruce prides himself on being very active in the cycling community and sponsors the local Select Cycling Club. They organise group rides and training camps throughout the year.
Bruce Reyneke Cycles are open from 8.30am to 5.30pm on Mondays, from 8am to 5.30pm from Tuesdays to Fridays and from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays.
