An anthem inspired by Madiba will be performed live for the first time at the FIFA Fan Fest™ in Port Elizabeth tonight.
Mo Jazz, the Motherwell-based band that will take to the stage at 7pm, will sing the song “South Africa we love you” as part of their hour-long gig at St George’s Park.
“It was specifically written for 2010,” said Mo Jazz manager Lennodia Petersen. “The lyrics are basically about thanking Nelson Mandela for what he has done for the country.”
She said the track was “quite serious” with a jazzy feel to it and that it was a proud moment for the five-member group to be bringing it to local audiences on such a momentous occasion.
The show, which will have a vibrant Afro-jazz feel, will also include hits from their latest album Mr Baloyi.
Fans can also expect an energetic performance with lots of dance moves when local up-and-coming kwaito artist Sdludla takes to the stage just before Mo Jazz at 5.50pm.
He was recently invited to perform at the official opening of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and is in the process of releasing his debut album in collaboration with artists such as Pakes and Mathausan.
Despite the chilly conditions, the crowd has swelled noticeably during the Côte d'Ivoire versus Portugal match that is currently taking place in PE and many of the fans are expected to make the short trip to the Fan Park afterwards.
Although the wet conditions are clearing, Dipuo Tawana from the PE Weather Office advised fans to bring along warm clothes and raincoats. “There may be some intermitted showers, but nothing like this morning.”
Entry to the Fan Park is free.
