Beachfront Lodges, said to have the “best beds in town”, have been confirmed as the official accommodation sponsors of next year’s The Herald Volkswagen Cycle Tour.
The 24th edition of the Eastern Cape’s premier cycling event, which annually draws a large number of visitors to the Friendly City, will take place from January 31 to February 1 next year.
With the start and finish on Port Elizabeth’s esplanade, the group’s self-catering and catered for accommodation along the beachfront offers the perfect lodgings for spectators, participants and officials, according to race director Shane Bradfield.
“It made sense to get an official accommodation sponsor on board,” he said. “For people visiting the city for the first time, finding suitable accommodation can prove quite daunting.”
Bradfield said Beachfront Lodges’ properties – Hornby Lodge, Beacon Lodge, Crow’s Nest and the King’s Tide Boutique Hotel – were all within walking distance from The Boardwalk, where the race starts and finishes.
To assist visitors, a link has been introduced from the official race site (www.heraldcycletour.co.za) to that of the sponsors (www.beachlodges.co.za). “Prospective clients will be able to gain easy access to information on the various accommodation options,” said Bradfield.
He said it was wonderful, in the current economic climate, to be able to offer people classy accommodation that won’t break the bank or deter them from coming to the event.
Apart from sponsoring accommodation for senior officials, the group will run fantastic budget accommodation options before, during and after the race, according to Johann Dreyer of Beachfront Lodges. He said all of their lodges were geared towards affordable comfort.
According to him, all the lodges are within five minute’s drive from the airport and within walking distance of the beachfront. “Our self-catering rooms can accommodate up to two adults and two children for as little as R385 per room per night.”
Dreyer said as their business was sleep, they went to great lengths to ensure that their mattresses and bedding were world class – hence their reputation for having the “beds beds in town”.
He said they had recently also introduced a real-time online booking system to simplify the booking process.
The Herald VW Cycle Tour weekend starts with three mountain bike races at the Addo Elephant National Park on Saturday, January 31. Events include the 85km Feature Race, the 65km Vodacom Challenge, the 42km Family Fun Ride and the CHOC Kiddies’ Challenge.
The MTR Smit 30km Family Fun Ride and the Reach for a Dream Kiddies Challenge will take place on the same day from The Boardwalk, with the 105km The Herald VW Cycle Tour and the 75km Schools and Open Challenge taking place on the Sunday.
Entry forms are available from cycle shops, www.heraldcycletour.co.za or www.cyclelab.co.za. For more information, phone Shane Bradfield on 074 114 4811.
