Wesley Augustyn (Mecer-NMMU) secured the overall title of the Jaco Rademeyer Estates Criterium Series by finishing fifth in the fourth and final leg that took place at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University on Sunday.

He topped the standings with 222 points, followed by Kevin Dorfling (Toyota-Cycle Lab) on 177 and Phillip Erasmus (Walmer) and Mario Nell (Friendly City) joint-third on 176.

Team-mate Sean Baillie, who won the 63-kilometre race, completed a clean-sweep for the Mecer-NMMU squad, who had won the first three legs through Andrew Crossman, Augustyn and Conrad Viljoen.

“I’m so happy about the team’s performance,” Augustyn said on Monday. “The fact that we produced four different winners shows the depth of our team.”

“Personally I’m surprised at my overall win as I felt I was not in top form, but I’ll take it.”

Baillie and Viljoen were the first who managed to break free from an attentive bunch, after four laps (three kilometres each) of racing.

Two laps later Viljoen won the first hot spot and the accompanying five points, with breakaway companion Baillie taking second (three) and Nell (two), heading the chasing bunch, third.

The twosome gradually increased their lead to 1 minute 57 seconds by the time they reached the second hot spot with six laps left. Viljoen once again took the honours, followed by Baillie and Jean Nell (Walmer).

For the second week running, they managed to lap the main field (with two laps to go), securing first and second uncontested.

Ronald Scheffer (PE Club) and Stephen Pugh (Cycle Lap) slipped the attentions of the bunch in the dying moments to place third and fourth respectively. The move was initiated by Cycle Lab in an effort to neutralise Erasmus, who was a threat to Dorfling’s second place overall.

Close on their heals were another splinter group, consisting of Jimmy Baillie (Mecer-NMMU; fifth), Augustyn (sixth) and Gavin Raath (Cyclo Pro; seventh).

Erasmus led the main bunch home in eighth with Nell on his wheel.

Overall placings (top 10): 1. Wesley Augustyn (222 points); 2. Kevin Dorfling (177); 3. Phillip Erasmus (176); 4. Mario Nell (176); 5. Ronald Scheffer (173); 6. Jeanne Nell (167); 7. Regardt Koen (161); 8. Stephen Pugh (153); 9. Luthando Fatyi (141); 10. Jimmy Baillie (139).
