Chart-topping performer and hit songwriter Garth Taylor is the big name at this year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge – and he can’t wait to be back in Port Elizabeth.
Known for his electric on-stage presence, the award-winning artist has a big following in the city.
“I know it’s a cliché, but the people of PE are so friendly and I always feel so welcome when I’m in town,” said Taylor, who will perform at Pollok Beach on May 7.
“PE is also part of the Cape, which was an integral part of my success in the music industry.”
Durban-based Taylor first burst onto the music scene in 1998 with his hit single “Why”, which held top position on radio stations for more than a month.
A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, he performs original material and plays piano, keyboard, guitar and drums.
He was hand-picked by Sir Richard Branson to perform at his son’s wedding in 2013 and has also shared stage space with the likes of Simply Red, Jonathan Butler and Shaggy.
Taylor is currently promoting his new album MADE, which includes the single “Crocodile Tears”, a song that he felt would be “a great hit in PE”.
SPAR Eastern Cape marketing director Abri Swart said the retailer was thrilled to have secured Taylor.
“We just love his energy and the way in which he interacts with his audience. We also admire the fact that he is a self-taught entrepreneur.”
That he was also actively involved in charity and other worthy initiatives made him the perfect fit for the SPAR Women’s Challenge, which was driven by an ethos of giving back to the community, said Swart.
Northwood Children’s Hospice and the Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities are the beneficiaries of the main event, while the Hope Jones Foundation has been chosen for the Little Ladies’ Race on May 2.
Taylor said that giving back to the community was very important to him. “Because I am in a position to make a difference, I feel that it’s my responsibility to do so wherever possible.”
Another visit to the Friendly City was an exciting prospect, said Taylor. “I can’t wait to be back in PE – it’s long overdue!”
