Volunteers form backbone of cycle tour

More than 200 volunteers will work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that the 24th edition of The Herald Volkswagen Cycle Tour run like a well-oiled machine.

Race organiser Shane Bradfield said yesterday the group of volunteers once again formed the backbone of the event, which takes place on Saturday, January 31, and Sunday, February 1.


Twenty out of twenty-four for PE cyclist

Mortification over his time when he first attempted The Herald Volkswagen Cycle Tour, motivated Duane Nel from Port Elizabeth to enter again – and he hasn’t stopped since!

On Sunday, February 1, he will be under starter’s orders for his 20th consecutive attempt at the event, which is now in its 24th year.


Strongest field ever assemble for cycle tour

With Malcolm Lange’s new Team Medscheme in the starting line-up, the 24th edition of The Herald Volkswagen Cycle Tour will boast its strongest field ever.

All of the country’s top professional outfits have now confirmed their participation in the Eastern Cape’s premier road race, which will take place on Sunday, February 1.


Cycle tour richer than ever

With an increased prize purse of R130 000, The Herald Volkswagen Cycle Tour has reaffirmed its status as one of the richest races in the country.

Race director Shane Bradfield said yesterday the prize money for the 24th edition of the Eastern Cape’s premier race – which will take place from January 31 to February 1 in and around Port Elizabeth – had been increased by R32 000 from last year.


Cyclists to enjoy "best beds in town"

Beachfront Lodges, said to have the “best beds in town”, have been confirmed as the official accommodation sponsors of next year’s The Herald Volkswagen Cycle Tour.

The 24th edition of the Eastern Cape’s premier cycling event, which annually draws a large number of visitors to the Friendly City, will take place from January 31 to February 1 next year.


Print specialists sign on as cycle tour sponsor

One of the most respected family businesses in Port Elizabeth has come on board as the official print sponsor for The Herald Volkswagen Cycle Tour.

Bukani Print, started 50 years ago by director Alan Taylor’s father, will be looking after the printing needs of the 24th edition of this popular cycle race.


New man at the helm of cycle tour

Due to the remarkable growth of its flagship sporting event, The Herald has appointed a full-time race director for its annual cycle tour.

Shane Bradfield, of Leisure Cycle Tours and Adventures, now spearheads the largest cycle event in the Eastern Cape, which will take place for the 24th time over the last weekend in January.


Elevated status for Addo mountain bike race

The feature mountain bike event that forms part of next year’s The Herald Volkswagen Cycle Tour weekend has received a major facelift to elevate its status to one of the toughest in the Eastern Cape.

According to race director Shane Bradfield, a new and particularly technical route covering 85 kilometres from the Addo National Elephant Park has been added to this year’s itinerary. In previous years, the premier event was over a distance of 65km.


Major events put spotlight on legislation for medical assistance

With Port Elizabeth’s increasing popularity as host city for major events, the time may be ripe for the municipality to formalise a medical assistance policy for major sporting events and concerts.

“There are no bylaws or formal legislation stipulating the nature of medical assistance required at big sporting events,” said Dave Gardner from the Gardmed ambulance and paramedics services in the metro.
